Jun 16, 2015 — Happy Day of the African Child! Did you know that this year’s theme is centered on ending child marriage?

While we are still working towards our goal of the White House releasing their strategy to end child marriage, we have some exciting news to share with you all.

Last Friday, President Obama signed the Girls Count Act of 2015 into law, marking a small step in the global fight to end child marriage. This legislation supports international programs that improve the birth registration of girls, ensuring that all children receive birth certificates and other necessary official documentation.

Right before this Act was signed, we released a brand new clip of Difret that exemplifies just how the Girls Count Act will make a difference. As seen in the clip, the lack of birth registry documentation leaves children without access to legal protection and other essential services vulnerable and at greater risk for exploitation and violence.

We took a step in the right direction with the Girls Count Act of 2015, but there is still further to go in the fight to end child marriage. Together we can end this harmful practice once and for all. Share this new video, and ask your friends and family to sign this petition to the White House.
